 DETAILS OF OUR RIVER CRUISE

Travel back through centuries with our group as you walk along cobblestone streets through grand cities and historic towns bedecked with twinkling Christmas trees and lined with wooden huts gleaming with handcrafted treasures. Iconic Christmas markets are plentiful across Europe and are on full display for your pleasure. Nuremberg’s festive Christkindlesmarkt, the largest and oldest Christmas market in Germany; Regensburg’s Christmas market at Thurn and Taxis Castle, considered one of Bavaria’s most beautiful and romantic; Vienna with its impressive Christmas markets that seem to majestically appear around every corner; and Budapest’s Vörösmarty Square, where products sold in the market are traditionally handmade are yours to explore. Sparkling lights; the festive sounds of children dressed as angels singing carols; enticing smells of hot-mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, sausages, and sweet treats of every kind; and timeless wonders are a feast for all your senses.

This Danube River cruise at Christmastime delights with the shining sights and sounds of the holiday season. Experience the beautiful traditions of the festive season amid 14th-century architecture and towns virtually unchanged since Roman times. Walk down narrow cobblestone streets lined with beautiful patrician houses and Christkindlmarkt stalls alight with glowing atmosphere of three beautiful countries. Sail through a winter wonderland and revel in the Advent season as each town is festively decorated, offering holiday wares and delicious fare to warm the heart.

We'll board our ship in Nuremberg, Germany, and visit this 1000-year-old city with a Local Guide. We'll stroll through Nuremberg’s Christmas market—one of Europe’s oldest. Be sure to try the city’s traditional gingerbread! Next, visit Regensburg—the only German city not bombed during WWII. Here, you’ll taste some of Germany’s famous beers and sausages. Next stop is Passau, known for its narrow winding streets lined with patrician houses, and the magnificent Italian baroque St. Stephen’s Cathedral which forms a perfect backdrop for the delightful Christkindlmarkt. In Melk, visit Austria’s majestic Benedictine Abbey, and enjoy a traditional Austrian cookie tasting as you cruise through a winter wonderland from the Wachau Valley to romantic Vienna. Here, where Christmas markets are scattered around the city, enjoy a culinary walk through the markets to taste some of the local traditional specialties. Our European Christmas river cruise ends in Budapest, the capital of Hungary, with guided sightseeing and plenty of free time to explore one more Christmas market and buy one-of-a-kind gifts. One of my very favorite things are the SMELLS of the season as we stroll through these markets. Gingerbread, sausages, chimney cakes, chestnuts and of course the hot mulled wine! Many of the market stops tend to be filled with tasting all kinds of goodies! Such fun with a group! Onboard, I'll be including lots of other FUN & FESTIVE surprises too! What a fantastically festive way to celebrate this holiday season together!

Ports of Call

Nuremberg (Days 1, 2)

The second largest city in Bavaria, Nuremburg is filled with gothic churches and traditional half-timbered houses. Although nearly destroyed during World War II, the protective city walls still feature some of the ancient moats, tall watchtowers and grand gateways. Nuremberg was long known for its metal and toy craftsmanship, and the city's modern historical significance can be traced to its role as the location for the post-World War II war crimes trials of the Nazis at the Palace of Justice. These trials were immortalized in the 1961 film, Judgment at Nuremberg.
Attractions & Activities
Take a walk around the 13th-century city walls, complete with moats, watchtowers, and gateways.

Roth (Day 2)

Roth is a district in Bavaria, Germany. It is bounded by the districts of Nurnberger Land, Neumarkt, Eichstatt, Weibenburg-Gunzenhausen, Ansbach and Furth, and the cities of Schwabach and Nuremberg. In medieval times the region was ruled by many lords. Brandenburg-Ansbach and Nuremberg owned possessions in this territory, and other parts were property of clerical states. When these clerical states were dissolved in 1803, the district fell to Bavaria.

Regensburg (Day 3)

Regensburg (German Ratisbon) is a city in Bavaria in the southeast of Germany at the confluence of the Danube and the Regen Rivers. For a time, Albertus Magnus was the bishop of Regensburg. The fourteenth-century Reichssaal in the town hall was the site of the Imperial Diet between 1663 and 1806. But Regensburg was devastated by French troops in 1809, and was ceded back to Bavaria in 1810. Regensburg's impressive medieval architecture survived the French assault, however, and much of it still stands, including the twelfth-century Steinerne Brcke (stone bridge) across the Danube and the Cathedral of Saint Peter (1275-1524). St. Emmeram's, a ninth-century Romanesque church, was significantly remodeled in the eighteenth century. St. Emmeram's Abbey in 1812 became the palace of the princes of Thurn and Taxis.
Attractions & Activities
The most striking view of this unspoiled medieval gem is from its 12th-century bridge, 1,014 feet long. Wander through the city's winding cobblestone streets to the historic market square. Many stop for refreshment at the "Wurstkuche" - serving sausages and beer for more than 800 years!

Passau (Day 4)

One of Germany´s oldest and most beautiful cities, Passau is ideally located at the confluence of the Inn, Ilz, and Danube rivers. This city, with its charming cobblestone streets and graceful arcades, is perfect for exploring. Begin with the impressive St Stephan´s Cathedral. Beneath its lavish interior is one of the largest pipe organs in the world.
Attractions & Activities
Set at the confluence of Inn, Ilz and Danube Rivers, enchanting Passau is home to charming cobblestone streets, elegantly colored building facades, and graceful arcades. Passau's baroque St. Stephan's Cathedral houses the world's largest church organ with more than 17,000 pipes, which is still used for concerts today.

Linz (Day 4)

Under the rule of the mighty Habsburgs, Austria was the dominant political force in Central Europe. Today it may be politically reconciled to being a minor player in the European Union but it has few peers as a year-round holiday destination, with plenty of winter sports in the Schwarzenegger-sized Alps, some of the most impressive and overblown architecture in Europe and an unrivalled musical tradition that even The Sound of Music couldn't sully.

Melk (Day 5)

Set amidst an important wine-growing region with picturesque villages and hilltop castles, the charming city of Melk lies at the confluence of the Danube and Melk Rivers at the base of the Wachau Valley. An imposing 900-year-old Benedictine abbey, a breathtaking example of baroque architecture, overlooks the town from its dramatic hilltop location. This architectural treasure has 365 windows, one for each day of the year. Its beautiful library houses medieval manuscripts and marvelous frescoes by Paul Troger, and its meticulously kept grounds are inviting and picturesque.

Wachau Valley (Day 5)

The Wachau Valley is a stretch of the Danube River between Melk and Krems in Lower Austria. It has been peopled since prehistoric times. How do we know this? Because its surrounding mountains contains traces of millennia of civilization, from agricultural use to architecture including villages, castles and monasteries, particularly dating from medieval times. Melk Abbey is rich in art and history and is a good place to start. Another way to see the area is by boat cruise down the Danube, seeing the many villages unfold as you round each bend in the river.

Vienna (Days 5, 6)

A wealth of treasures await you in Vienna - one of Europe´s most dynamic cities. A center of classical music, art, theater, and history, Vienna is the city of the waltz, the Spanish Riding School, Sacher Torte, and the famous Vienna Boys´ Choir. A number of excursions allow you to capture the spirit of this elegant city.
Attractions & Activities
Any visitor to Vienna should be sure to stop in one of the city's famous cafes to taste the delectable Sacher Torte. Noted landmarks include the impressive Hofsburg Palace, Vienna Opera House, and lavish Schonbrunn Palace, the preferred residence of the Hapsburgs.

Budapest (Days 7, 8)

This enchanting and exotic capital of Hungary straddles the banks of the Danube and is divided into two distinct parts, traditional Buda and more modern Pest. Budapest is aptly called "Paris of the East," for its beautiful evening illumination and reflected lights in the Danube's waters.
Attractions & Activities
The old city features amazing examples of architecture such as Buda Castle, the baroque Parliament building, Chain Bridge and Matthias church, where the coronation ceremonies of Hungarian Kings were held. Gellert Hill, high above the city, offers not-to-be missed views.
